Omaruru sits on the Omaruru River in the foothills of the Erongo Mountains, roughly halfway between Windhoek and the coast on the C33. Jacaranda-lined streets, a working wine estate, galleries and studios and the 1908 Franke Tower give it more character than most Namibian towns of its size.

The town has fuel, a supermarket, a pharmacy and workshops — worth using before the coast run, since the next comparable services are at Karibib or Swakopmund.
Omaruru also holds a small museum in the old Rhenish mission house and the 1908 Franke Tower above the river crossing, both of which give the town a depth that most Namibian stopovers lack.
