Kalahari & Eastern Namibia Accommodation

This listing covers the Kalahari sandveld and the eastern farming districts running out to the Botswana border — the red-dune country south and east of Windhoek, and the cattle country around Gobabis, Stampriet and the Trans-Kalahari crossing at Buitepos.Two quite different kinds of property sit side by side here. The first is the Kalahari lodge, typically on a private reserve of red linear dunes and camelthorn, selling sundowner dune drives, walks with San guides and good stargazing. The second is the eastern guest farm or roadside lodge, which exists mainly to serve people driving the B6 to or from Botswana and is priced and equipped accordingly. Camping and self-catering units are common in both groups.Use of this area is strongly directional. Travellers arriving overland from Botswana or Johannesburg take a first Namibian night around Gobabis or Buitepos, while those heading south from Windhoek toward Sossusvlei or the canyon often break the journey on a Kalahari reserve near Stampriet or Mariental. Either way it is usually a single night, and the appeal is space and quiet rather than a long activity list.
