Namibia Itineraries
Ready-made route ideas from one week to a full circuit of the country
Home » Namibia Itineraries
These route frameworks are starting points, not fixed schedules. Namibia’s distances mean that a realistic itinerary usually covers fewer places, more thoroughly, rather than trying to see everything. Adjust nights to your pace, and always confirm current road conditions and realistic travel times locally or with your vehicle provider before finalising a route, since conditions can change seasonally. Each itinerary links to relevant destination guides for detail on individual stops.
Featured self-drive itineraries
Our four flagship day-by-day routes, each with driving times, where to stay and what to do at every stop:
- Namibia 7-Day Itinerary — the classic one-week highlights loop.
- Namibia 10-Day Itinerary — the classic route plus Damaraland.
- Namibia 14-Day Itinerary — the complete two-week self-drive.
- Namibia 21-Day Itinerary — the ultimate three-week loop, including the Zambezi.
Choose your route at a glance
Eight route ideas are outlined below, grouped from short introductions to longer, slower circuits. Each links straight to its full detail further down this page.

7 days — fast classic highlights. Sossusvlei, Swakopmund and southern Etosha at pace. Two long driving days; the shortest route that still covers the icons.

10 days — the classic route plus Damaraland. Adds rock art and desert-adapted wildlife, and breaks the long coast-to-Etosha leg into two comfortable halves.

14 days — broad north and south circuit. Adds the southern loop — Fish River Canyon, Aus and Lüderitz. The strongest all-round first trip.

21 days — the comprehensive national route. Everything above plus the Kavango and Zambezi. Green, riverine country that changes the character of the trip.
Read full itinerary »7-Day Namibia Introduction
Who it suits: First-time visitors with limited time who want a manageable taste of desert, wildlife and the capital.
Route sequence: Windhoek → Sossusvlei area → Swakopmund → Windhoek.
Approximate nights by area: 2 nights Windhoek/Sossusvlei area, 2 nights Sossusvlei, 2 nights Swakopmund, 1 night en route back.
Major trade-offs: Skips Etosha and the north entirely; covers desert and coast well but is a taste rather than a full picture of the country.
Road and vehicle notes: Manageable in a standard 2WD with reasonable clearance on the main tourist roads; gravel driving experience still helpful.
Full day-by-day guide: the 7-day Namibia itinerary, including a route table and an honest note on the two long driving days.
10-Day Classic Namibia Route
Who it suits: Visitors wanting the best-known highlights: desert, coast and wildlife, in one loop.
Route sequence: Windhoek → Sossusvlei → Swakopmund/Walvis Bay → Damaraland → Etosha → Windhoek.
Approximate nights by area: 2 nights Sossusvlei, 2 nights Swakopmund, 2 nights Damaraland, 2 nights Etosha, 2 nights Windhoek/transit.
Major trade-offs: A well-balanced but fairly fast-paced loop; each area gets limited time, and driving days are long.
Road and vehicle notes: Best with a higher-clearance vehicle or 4×4, particularly for Damaraland; gravel driving is extensive.
Full day-by-day guide: the 10-day Namibia itinerary, including what the extra three days buy over a week.
14-Day Namibia Highlights
Who it suits: Visitors with two weeks who want the classic route with more breathing room.
Route sequence: As the 10-day Classic Route, with an added day in each of Sossusvlei, Damaraland and Etosha, plus one relaxed transit day.
Approximate nights by area: 3 nights Sossusvlei, 3 nights Swakopmund, 3 nights Damaraland, 3 nights Etosha, 2 nights Windhoek/transit.
Major trade-offs: Still a full loop, but with enough time to add optional activities such as a scenic flight, boat cruise or extra game drive.
Road and vehicle notes: Suits a 4×4 with reasonable ground clearance; allows more relaxed daily driving distances than the 10-day version.
Full day-by-day guide: the 14-day Namibia itinerary, including where to shorten the route if you have twelve days.
Other Namibia routes worth considering

14-Day Northern Namibia and Zambezi
Who it suits: Wildlife-focused travellers wanting Etosha combined with the wetter, greener north-east.
Route sequence: Windhoek → Etosha → Kavango → Zambezi Region → return via Grootfontein.
Approximate nights by area: 3 nights Etosha, 2 nights Kavango, 4 nights Zambezi Region, 2 nights transit, 2 nights Windhoek.
Major trade-offs: Misses the desert and coast entirely; rewards travellers interested in rivers, birdlife and cross-border parks rather than dunes.
Road and vehicle notes: Long transit days between the north-west and north-east; check seasonal road and river conditions, especially in the wet season.
10-Day Southern Namibia
Who it suits: Travellers focused on canyon and quiver-tree scenery, often combining with a South Africa trip.
Route sequence: Windhoek → Southern Namibia (Fish River Canyon, Lüderitz) → Sossusvlei → Windhoek.
Approximate nights by area: 3 nights southern region, 2 nights Lüderitz, 2 nights Sossusvlei area, 3 nights transit/Windhoek.
Major trade-offs: A quieter, less-visited route with long open-road driving days and fewer services between stops.
Road and vehicle notes: Standard 2WD is usually adequate on the main routes; carry extra fuel and water given the distances between towns.
7-Day Coast and Desert
Who it suits: Shorter-trip visitors who want dunes and coastal towns without the northern wildlife circuit.
Route sequence: Windhoek → Sossusvlei → Swakopmund/Walvis Bay → Windhoek.
Approximate nights by area: 2 nights Sossusvlei area, 3 nights Swakopmund/Walvis Bay, 2 nights Windhoek/transit.
Major trade-offs: No wildlife park, but a relaxed pace with fewer long driving days than most other routes.
Road and vehicle notes: Manageable in a standard 2WD; coastal fog and desert heat are the main planning considerations.
14-Day Damaraland and Kunene
Who it suits: Travellers with a genuine interest in rock art, remote landscapes and Himba cultural heritage who are comfortable with basic services.
Route sequence: Windhoek → Damaraland → Kaokoland and Kunene (Opuwo, Epupa Falls) → return via Damaraland.
Approximate nights by area: 4 nights Damaraland, 5 nights Kaokoland/Kunene, 5 nights transit/Windhoek.
Major trade-offs: One of the most remote and rewarding routes, but with the least infrastructure of any itinerary on this page; not a first-time self-drive route.
Road and vehicle notes: A 4×4 with full recovery equipment is strongly recommended; fuel, water and mobile signal are all limited for extended stretches.
Slow-Travel Namibia
Who it suits: Travellers with three weeks or more who prefer fewer stops and more time in each place.
Route sequence: A flexible framework: choose three or four regions from the destination guides and spend four to six nights in each, minimising transit days.
Approximate nights by area: Variable, but structured around 4-6 nights per region rather than 1-2.
Major trade-offs: Covers less ground overall, but allows day trips, rest days and a genuinely unhurried pace, especially valuable in the desert heat.
Road and vehicle notes: Vehicle choice depends entirely on the regions chosen; check each destination guide for local road notes.
All timings above are approximate and assume typical conditions. Always confirm current road conditions and realistic travel times before finalising a route; conditions can change with rainfall, roadworks or seasonal park access rules. See Self-Drive Namibia for detailed vehicle and road guidance, and Travel Planning for broader trip preparation.
If you would rather book a fully guided option than self-drive the whole route, compare escorted Guided Namibia Tours, or a self-drive package with the vehicle and route already arranged, as alternatives to planning the whole route yourself.
