One week is enough to see the three signatures of Namibia — the red dunes of Sossusvlei, the desert-meets-Atlantic coast at Swakopmund, and the wildlife of Etosha — as long as you keep the loop tight and accept a couple of longer driving days. This 7-day self-drive route suits a standard 2WD-friendly car on the main routes; a higher-clearance vehicle is more comfortable on gravel. Roads are sealed or well-graded for most of the distance, but always check current road conditions before each leg.

Be clear with yourself about the pace. This is a highlights trip, not a relaxed one. Two of the six driving days are long, and one — Swakopmund to Etosha — is a full day behind the wheel. Seven days is enough to see the dunes, the coast and your first elephant. It is not enough to feel unhurried.
Windhoek → Sossusvlei (2 nights) → Swakopmund (2 nights) → Etosha (1–2 nights) → Windhoek. Total driving is roughly 1,700 km.
Day 1 — Arrive in Windhoek
Collect your hire car, stock up and settle in. Spend the afternoon orienting yourself in the capital, or push an hour south to a Kalahari-edge lodge to start the desert scenery early. Where to stay: Windhoek accommodation.
Days 2–3 — Sossusvlei & Sesriem
Drive Windhoek to Sesriem (about 330 km, 4.5–5 hours). The next morning, enter the gate at first light for Sossusvlei, Deadvlei and Dune 45 before the heat builds, then explore Sesriem Canyon in the afternoon. Days 4–5 — Swakopmund
Drive Sesriem to Swakopmund (about 350 km, 5 hours) via Solitaire and Walvis Bay; detour to the Walvis Bay lagoon for flamingos. Where to stay: Swakopmund accommodation. What to do: Swakopmund tours — living-desert tours, Sandwich Harbour and catamaran cruises. Guide: Swakopmund.
Day 6 — Etosha (southern side)
A longer day: Swakopmund to Etosha via the Andersson Gate and Okaukuejo (about 560 km, 6.5 hours). Arrive for an afternoon and evening at the floodlit Okaukuejo waterhole. Where to stay: accommodation near Etosha. Guide: Etosha National Park.
Day 7 — Game drive & return to Windhoek
Take an early waterhole circuit, then drive Okaukuejo to Windhoek (about 450 km, 5 hours) for departure. With a spare night, add a second Etosha night and break the final drive near Otjiwarongo.
The two long driving days
Day 6, Swakopmund to Okaukuejo (~560 km) is the hardest leg here. Leave by 07:00. It is almost entirely tar via Usakos, Omaruru and Otjiwarongo, so it is easy driving rather than technical driving — but arriving at an Etosha camp after dark breaches park rules and wastes the gate fee. Day 7 pairs a morning game drive with a five-hour return, so decide the night before which you want, because comfortably doing both is optimistic.
Which route to Sesriem
Two options, and the choice matters more than the distance suggests. The shorter gravel route via Rehoboth, Klein Aub and Rietoog crosses the Khomas Hochland and is far more scenic. The longer route via Mariental and Maltahöhe is mostly tar and usually about an hour quicker in practice. If Day 2 is your first day on Namibian gravel and follows an overnight flight, take the tar. Do you need a 4×4?
For this route, no. Every leg is drivable in a 2WD sedan in normal dry conditions. What genuinely helps is higher clearance and a sound spare-tyre arrangement — corrugations and sharp gravel cause punctures far more often than anything dramatic. The one place a 4×4 earns its keep is the last 5 km of deep sand between the Sossusvlei 2WD car park and Deadvlei, and a shuttle exists for exactly that. Sossusvlei: why the early start matters
Sesriem gate opens at sunrise, and guests staying inside the park gate get in ahead of everyone staying outside it. In practice that is the difference between photographing Deadvlei in long shadow and photographing it in flat mid-morning light alongside a crowd. If dune photography matters to you, that one booking decision outweighs any camera setting. Plan Dune 45 or Big Daddy for early morning and be off the sand by the middle of the day — it gets seriously hot and there is no shade.
Swakopmund: choose one or two things
You have effectively one full day, so pick deliberately instead of sampling everything. The realistic options are a Living Desert tour (small dune-belt creatures; excellent with children and for non-adrenaline travellers), a Walvis Bay boat trip for pelicans, seals and dolphins, quad biking or sandboarding, or a scenic flight over the Skeleton Coast. Etosha on one night: what is realistic
One night at Okaukuejo buys an afternoon arrival, a floodlit waterhole in the evening and a morning game drive. That is a real Etosha experience and often an excellent one — Okaukuejo’s waterhole is among the most reliable places in Africa for rhino after dark. What it does not buy is the eastern side of the park, or a second chance if the animals are quiet. Spend the evening at the waterhole rather than over a long dinner. Background in the Etosha guide.

Browse by region rather than by town: Windhoek accommodation, Sossusvlei accommodation, Swakopmund accommodation and Etosha accommodation. Beyond the two properties worth booking early — anything inside the Sesriem or Etosha gates — the only other thing to lock in ahead is your vehicle, with the spare-tyre arrangement confirmed in writing.

Self-drive notes
Fuel up at Solitaire, Walvis Bay and before Etosha, and carry more water than you think you need. Reduce speed on the gravel sections between Sesriem and the coast. Book Etosha and Sesriem accommodation well ahead in the high season. Distances and times are approximate — check current road conditions before you travel.
Alternatives
Reverse the loop (Etosha first) to finish on the coast, or drop Etosha and add a third Sossusvlei or Swakopmund night for a slower, photography-focused week.
