Kaokoland Accommodation

Kaokoland, in the far north-west of the Kunene Region, is the most remote area covered on this site, and the accommodation list reflects that: a small number of properties serving a very large and sparsely populated landscape. The practical anchors are Opuwo, which functions as the regional supply town, Epupa Falls on the Kunene River, and Sesfontein on the southern approach.Expect riverside camps under makalani palms at Epupa, a handful of lodges and guesthouses in and around Opuwo, and community campsites elsewhere. Many are tented or chalet-style, run on generator or solar power, and have no reliable connectivity. Catering is often full-board simply because there is nowhere else to eat. Most travellers use Kaokoland for two things: the Kunene River and its falls, and respectful, arranged visits to Himba settlements. Access is the deciding factor. The route to Opuwo is tarred from Kamanjab, but beyond it — and certainly on the tracks toward Van Zyl’s Pass — a properly equipped 4×4, extra fuel and water, and ideally a second vehicle are not optional extras. Bookings should be made well ahead in the dry season because capacity is genuinely limited.Read the Kaokoland & Kunene destination guide before committing to a route, and see the 21-day itinerary for how this region fits a longer trip.
