Sossusvlei and the surrounding red dunes are one of the most photographed landscapes in Namibia, reached through the Sesriem gate on the eastern edge of the Namib-Naukluft National Park. Most travellers base themselves at a lodge or campsite near Sesriem so they can enter the park at first light, when the light on the dunes and the temperatures are both at their best.

Accommodation ranges from lodges just outside the gate to a campsite inside the park boundary itself, which is the only option allowing entry before the public gate opens.
