Namibia 21-Day Itinerary: The Ultimate Three-Week Self-Drive

Three weeks adds the green, water-rich north-east — the Kavango and Zambezi rivers, Bwabwata, Mudumu and the Four Rivers route — a completely different Namibia of floodplains, elephants and river lodges. This is the full national loop, and it rewards a relaxed pace. Check current road conditions before each leg, and note that the north-east has a distinct wet season that affects access.

How the north-east changes the trip

Everything up to Etosha is recognisably the same Namibia as the shorter routes: desert, gravel, dry air, big empty distances. Then you turn east at Grootfontein and the country changes completely. The Kavango and Zambezi are green, low-lying, riverine and comparatively densely populated — perennial rivers, reed banks, mokoro canoes, hippo and crocodile, woodland rather than dune.

Three practical consequences follow. The driving gets easier but longer: the B8 is good tar almost the whole way, so the challenge is distance rather than surface. The wildlife works differently — Bwabwata and the riverfronts are about water-based game viewing and birding rather than waterhole sitting. And the trip stops being a loop, which is the single biggest planning decision on this itinerary. Compared with the 14-day route, three weeks does not just add stops; it changes the shape of the journey.

Days 1–2 — Kalahari

Days 3–4 — Fish River Canyon

Days 5–6 — Lüderitz & Aus

Days 14–16 — Etosha

Days 17–18 — Rundu & the Kavango

Day 19 — Divundu & Bwabwata

Rundu to Divundu (about 200 km, 2.5 hours). Popa Falls, the Mahango and Buffalo core areas, and river activities.

Day 20 — Katima Mulilo & the Zambezi

Day 21 — Return

FlyNamibia operates a scheduled service between Katima Mulilo (Mpacha) and Windhoek — verify the current schedule when you book. If your rental company permits a one-way return in Katima Mulilo/Mpacha, a flight back to Windhoek can avoid the long return drive. Otherwise, allow approximately two additional driving days back toward Windhoek via Grootfontein.

Season and road conditions in the north-east

This is the one part of Namibia where season genuinely changes what is possible. The Kavango and Zambezi receive far more rain than the rest of the country, concentrated roughly between December and April, and the wet season has real effects: secondary and park tracks in Bwabwata and along the riverfronts can become difficult or impassable while the main B8 tar stays fine; the Zambezi floodplains hold water well after the rain stops, which is spectacular to look at and restricts vehicle access; and mosquito activity is at its highest.

The dry months are the straightforward choice for this route — firmer tracks, concentrated game and fewer insects. The green season rewards birders and photographers who accept the constraints. Either way, ask your lodges directly about current track conditions before committing to any off-tar excursion, and read the best time to visit Namibia alongside this page, since the ideal months for the north-east are not identical to those for Etosha and Sossusvlei.

The long legs

Two legs stand out. Lüderitz to Sesriem (~490 km) on Day 7 crosses empty country and wants an early start. Etosha to Rundu (~500 km) on Day 17 is the transition day into the north-east; it is all tar via Tsumeb and Grootfontein, but it is a full day and there is little reason to linger en route. Getting home from Katima Mulilo

Katima Mulilo is about 1,187 km from Windhoek, which is two full days of driving. You have three realistic options and they should be settled before you book the vehicle, not after.

One-way vehicle drop is cleanest if the rental company offers it and you accept the one-way fee, which on this distance is not trivial. Fly out from Katima Mulilo, which removes two driving days but means checking current domestic schedules and confirming the rental company will collect. Or drive back, in which case add two days and break the return at Rundu and Otjiwarongo — and be honest that these are retracing days, not sightseeing days. If the drive back is your plan, consider trimming a night earlier in the route to pay for it.

If three weeks becomes eighteen or nineteen days

Cut from the middle and the ends, not from the north-east — the Zambezi leg is the whole reason for choosing this itinerary over the 14-day one. In order: drop the third Swakopmund night (the town is comfortable but not why you came this far); drop one Kalahari night and start south from Windhoek directly; drop the third Etosha night if you must, accepting less coverage of the eastern side. That recovers three days without touching the structure. If you need to lose more than that, the honest answer is to drop the north-east entirely and run the 14-day loop properly instead of running this one badly.

Where to stay on each leg

In route order: Kalahari & Eastern Namibia, Fish River Canyon, Lüderitz, Sossusvlei, Swakopmund, Damaraland, Etosha, Kavango and Zambezi. Riverfront lodges in the Kavango and Zambezi are fewer in number than anywhere else on this route and the good ones book out early — secure those first and build the rest around them.

Self-drive notes & alternatives

The Zambezi leg is a different climate and wet-season access varies — confirm Bwabwata and Mudumu access and any river-lodge transfers. Malaria prophylaxis is relevant in the north-east; seek current medical advice. Consider a Twyfelfontein / Kaokoland extension, or cross into Botswana (Chobe) or Victoria Falls from the Zambezi for a regional finale.
