Uis is a small settlement on the C36 below the Brandberg, Namibia’s highest massif, in the dry inland country between the Erongo and Damaraland. It grew around a tin mine that closed in the 1990s, and the tailings dumps still stand at the edge of town — an unusual industrial footnote in an otherwise empty landscape.

The White Lady rock painting sits in the Tsisab Ravine about half an hour north-west of town, reached on a guided walk of roughly two hours each way, and the massif rises to Königstein at 2,573 metres. Guides are arranged at the ravine entrance and are compulsory.
Uis has fuel, a small supermarket and basic services, and is the last of those before the Damaraland roads north. It is hot: this is one of the warmer inhabited parts of the country, and shade and water matter more here than the distances suggest.
Camping here in the hotter months is demanding — Uis regularly runs well above 35°C in summer afternoons and the granite and gravel hold the heat into the night. Between May and August it is far more comfortable, and the nights can be genuinely cold.

Uis is also the practical pivot between two very different regions: Twyfelfontein and the Damaraland roads run north, Omaruru and the Erongo lie east, and the coast at Henties Bay is about two hours south-west. Few settlements this small carry that much routing weight.
