Keetmanshoop is the largest town in southern Namibia and the natural overnight stop on the B1 between Windhoek and the South African border, as well as the junction for the B4 west to Aus and Lüderitz. Almost every self-drive itinerary through the south passes through it.

West on the B4 lie Aus, the Garub desert horses and Lüderitz; south lie Grünau, the Fish River Canyon and the border; north lie the Kalahari and Windhoek. Whichever way you are heading, none of those legs is short, and each is far more comfortable started early from a bed in town.
