Gobabis is the main town of the Omaheke Region and the last Namibian centre of any size on the Trans-Kalahari Highway before the Buitepos border post into Botswana. Cattle country surrounds it — this is the heart of Namibia’s commercial ranching belt.

Having rooms, chalets and camping on one property is genuinely useful on this route, because the Trans-Kalahari carries a mixed traffic of overlanders, self-drive tourists and freight crews. A group travelling in two vehicles with different budgets can stay in the same place.
Border logistics are the main reason to sleep in Gobabis rather than push on. Buitepos and Mamuno keep limited hours, rental vehicles need a cross-border letter, and there is a veterinary control point on the Botswana side. Starting fresh in the morning makes all of that routine.
