Mariental is the administrative centre of the Hardap Region, sitting on the B1 about two and a half hours south of Windhoek. Hardap Dam lies about 25 km north-west of town, on the escarpment above the Fish River, and is the obvious short excursion if you arrive with daylight to spare. The reservoir supports fishing and good birdlife, and the view from the dam wall is the one genuinely scenic thing near Mariental.
Onward legs from here are all long: Keetmanshoop is about two hours south, Windhoek two and a half north, and the Kalahari dune lodges an hour or more east on gravel. Filling the tank before leaving is standard.
