The campsite at Omarunga Epupa-Falls Camp puts self-sufficient travellers on the same stretch of Kunene riverbank as the camp itself, about 700 metres from the falls, at a fraction of the room rate. For anyone driving north in a fitted-out vehicle it is by a wide margin the cheapest bed in Epupa — roughly a tenth of the village room rates — and a long-established site with a settled following among self-drive travellers.
This is a bring-your-own-tent booking. The pitch is serviced but bare, so roof tent or ground tent, bedding, cooking equipment and water containers are all your own. What you gain by camping here rather than at a roadside pull-off is shade, security, ablutions and — the part that matters most after the drive from Opuwo — a camp kitchen and restaurant a short walk away when you decide you would rather not cook.
Meals are not included in the pitch rate, which keeps it genuinely cheap, but dinner can be booked at the camp. That flexibility is useful at Epupa specifically, because the village itself has very little in the way of supplies and nothing you would plan a menu around. The riverbank position is the reason to be here. Permanent water in a landscape that has almost none produces a narrow green corridor of palms, baobabs and birdlife, and the sound of the falls carries into the site at night. The walk up to the western viewpoint for sunset takes about twenty minutes and is the single thing every visitor to Epupa should do.
Come prepared for the logistics rather than the comfort. The road up from Opuwo is a long gravel run best driven in the morning with high clearance, fuel at Epupa is unreliable, and mobile signal is patchy at best. It is precisely because the place is awkward to reach that it still feels remote once you are there.
