Mariental is the administrative centre of the Hardap Region, sitting on the B1 about two and a half hours south of Windhoek. It is the gateway town for the Kalahari red-dune country to the east and for Hardap Dam a short drive to the north-west, and almost every southbound itinerary passes through it.

Travellers heading east into the Kalahari lodges the next morning should note that the approach roads are gravel and the lodges typically sit an hour or more off the tar. Fill up in Mariental rather than assuming there will be fuel closer in.
