Gobabis is the main town of the Omaheke Region in eastern Namibia, set in the red-sand Kalahari sandveld country that stretches towards the Botswana border. Often described as Namibia’s cattle country, the town and its surrounding farms form one of the country’s most important ranching areas, and Gobabis itself functions mainly as a practical stop on the Trans-Kalahari Highway rather than a headline tourist destination.

Gobabis sits within the Kalahari sandveld, a landscape of deep red sand, scattered camelthorn trees and cattle-grazing country. Gobabis developed from the late nineteenth century onward as a small settlement and administrative post, growing over the twentieth century into the commercial centre for the surrounding farming district as German and later South African-era farmers established cattle ranches across the Omaheke sandveld. The wider region has long been home to San (Bushman) communities as well, whose presence in the area predates commercial farming by many centuries, and whose relationship with the ranching economy that followed has at times been a difficult one.

Present-day agricultural and transport role

Today Gobabis remains closely tied to the cattle industry, with regular livestock auctions and a local economy built around farming, agricultural services and transport. Its position on the Trans-Kalahari Highway, the main tarred route linking Windhoek and Walvis Bay to Botswana and onward to South Africa, also makes it an important stop for freight traffic and self-drive travellers, who commonly use Gobabis as a fuel and rest stop.

The farmland surrounding Gobabis is some of Namibia’s most productive cattle-ranching country, and guest farms in the area offer visitors a genuine taste of this working agricultural landscape.

Fuel and supplies

Gobabis has fuel stations, supermarkets, banks and other services typical of a district centre, making it a sensible stop to refuel and restock before continuing on to Botswana or back towards Windhoek.

Road access and accommodation context

Gobabis is reached via the tarred B6 highway from Windhoek, a straightforward drive of a little under two hours, and the same road continues east as the Trans-Kalahari Highway towards Buitepos and the Botswana border.
