Keetmanshoop is the largest town in southern Namibia and the natural overnight stop on the B1 between Windhoek and the South African border, as well as the junction for the B4 west to Aus and Lüderitz. Almost every self-drive itinerary through the south passes through it, and most spend a night.
Quiver Inn Guesthouse is one of the town’s established guesthouses and takes its name from the kokerboom that grow on the outcrops north of town. Rooms are straightforward and practical: the lead-in twin has two single beds and air conditioning, which is not a luxury in Keetmanshoop, where summer afternoons regularly climb past 35°C and the heat holds well into the evening.
The town itself repays an hour or two. The old Rhenish mission church of 1895 now houses the municipal museum, the German colonial Kaiserliche Realschule still stands on the main street, and the railway yards are a reminder of how the town grew. The bigger draw is 13 km north-east: the Quiver Tree Forest, where several hundred kokerbome stand on a dolerite outcrop, and the Giant’s Playground next door, a jumble of stacked dolerite blocks. Both are best in the last hour of light.
Rates are quoted room-only, without breakfast, which keeps the nightly figure low and suits travellers who are on the road early. Keetmanshoop has supermarkets, fuel and a reasonable choice of places to eat, so self-catering or eating out are both easy — unlike almost anywhere else on the southern route.
Most people use the town as a hinge rather than a destination. From here it is roughly three hours west to Aus, five to Lüderitz, three south to the Fish River Canyon turnoff and a long day north to Windhoek.
