Ondangwa is one of the three closely linked towns, alongside Oshakati and Ongwediva, that form the commercial heart of north-central Namibia. Historically significant as an early mission and administrative centre, it now serves as an important transport hub, home to the region’s main airport, and a practical base for exploring Owambo heritage sites and the routes north towards the Angolan border.

Ondangwa sits on the flat Owambo floodplain, a landscape shaped by seasonal oshanas, shallow water channels that fill during the rainy season and support both farming and traditional fishing. The town lies close to Oshakati and Ongwediva, together forming a single urbanised cluster in an otherwise rural region. Ondangwa developed around a Finnish mission station established in the late nineteenth century, one of the earliest and most significant mission posts in Owamboland, and later became an important South African administrative and military centre during the colonial and apartheid periods, including the pre-independence conflict. The nearby Nakambale mission house, one of the oldest buildings in the region, now operates as a museum reflecting this history.

How to get there and getting around

Ondangwa is reached via the tarred B1 from Windhoek and Etosha, and has scheduled domestic flights connecting it to Windhoek’s airports. Ondangwa, Oshakati and Ongwediva are close enough together that a private vehicle allows easy movement between all three; local taxis are also widely available.

Best time to visit and suggested length of stay

Ondangwa can be visited year-round; the rainy season (roughly November to April) brings the oshanas to life but can also make some rural roads more difficult. Most visitors treat Ondangwa as a transit point or overnight stop connected to its neighbouring towns; Ondangwa is particularly known for its airport and transport role, while Oshakati is the larger commercial centre.
