Multi-day accommodated or camping trips may also start from Windhoek or Swakopmund, with the first day spent travelling to Sesriem before the dunes are explored on subsequent days. A smaller number of excursions depart from lodges already based near Sesriem.

Duration and Suitability

Single-day trips from Windhoek or the coast involve a very early pickup (often before 5am) and a long day of driving alongside the sightseeing, which suits travellers short on time but not those who dislike long vehicle journeys. Multi-day trips spread the travel over two or three days with camping or lodge stays near the dunes, allowing more time at each site and an easier pace, but require additional nights away from your base. Whichever option you choose, mornings and midday heat both need planning for: an early start avoids the worst heat for the dune walk to Deadvlei.

Responsible Tourism

Stick to marked paths in Deadvlei and around the dunes rather than cutting new tracks across the sand, and carry out any rubbish. Water is scarce in this environment, so operators who visibly plan for guests to carry enough water, and who keep vehicle activity to designated roads, are preferable.
