Fort Sesfontein is exactly what the name says: a German colonial fort, built at the turn of the twentieth century at the springs that give Sesfontein its name, abandoned for decades and restored in the 1990s as a lodge. Staying inside a whitewashed fort courtyard with palms in the middle of it is an unusual experience in Namibia, and it is the main reason travellers route through here rather than past.
The location is strategically useful. Sesfontein sits at the junction where the roads from Palmwag and Khowarib meet the tracks running north into Kaokoland and west toward Puros and the Hoanib. It is the last place on that route with a proper lodge, a kitchen and reliable staff, which makes it the natural overnight stop before or after the harder driving.
Rooms are conventional twins with air conditioning, and rates run half board with dinner, bed and breakfast included. That arrangement makes sense here: Sesfontein village has very limited supplies, and having the evening meal taken care of removes the main logistical problem of an overnight in a remote settlement.
The surrounding country is desert-adapted elephant and black rhino range, and the lodge arranges guided excursions into the Hoanib riverbed and the surrounding concessions. As anywhere in this landscape, sightings depend on where the animals have moved to and how much water is holding in the riverbeds; go with realistic expectations and a good guide.
It is fair to be direct about expectations. The fort building and the spring-fed setting are genuinely distinctive; the rooms and the service are plainer than the exterior suggests, and traveller feedback on that gap has been mixed. Book it for the fort, the springs and the position rather than for polish.
