Omulunga Bush Camp lies about ten kilometres outside Ruacana, the small town built around the hydroelectric scheme at the point where the Kunene River swings west along the Angolan border. It is a quiet, unpretentious bush camp that has built a steady following among self-drive travellers working the northern loop.
Accommodation is in tents with two single beds, booked on a room-only basis. Nothing here is elaborate; the appeal is a clean, secure, comfortable night in mopane bush at a price closer to camping than to lodging, with the option of free cancellation and payment at the property rather than up front.
Ruacana itself is worth timing properly. The falls only run when the Kunene is high and water is being released — in a good wet season the drop is spectacular, and for much of the dry season the gorge below the wall is simply dry rock. Check conditions before making a long detour purely for the waterfall, and treat the town as what it mostly is: a well-supplied staging point with fuel, shops and a border post.
The camp works best as the northern hinge of a Kunene loop. From here the C46 runs east toward Oshakati and the Owambo north, while the D3700 runs west along the river toward Swartbooisdrift, Epupa and eventually Opuwo — a long, rough, genuinely remote drive that ranks among the finest in Namibia for travellers properly equipped for it. Starting that leg rested, fuelled and watered makes a considerable difference.
Because meals are not included, plan to self-cater or eat in Ruacana. Supplies in town are reasonable by north-western standards, which is another argument for stopping here rather than at one of the smaller settlements further along the river. Mobile coverage is generally usable around Ruacana and becomes unreliable within an hour of leaving it westward.
