Stampriet sits in the Auob River valley about 60 km east of Mariental, at the point where the Kalahari sand takes over from the Hardap plains. Artesian water beneath the valley makes it an unlikely green pocket in dry country — vineyards, citrus and vegetable gardens run along the riverbed, which is why the settlement exists at all.

Stampriet is also a practical staging point for the gravel routes east. Gochas lies along the Auob, and beyond it the roads run toward Aranos and the Botswana frontier — long, empty driving that should be started early and with full tanks.
The valley’s artesian water is the reason all of this is possible. Boreholes here reach a confined aquifer that produces without pumping, which is why a green farming settlement exists in the middle of Kalahari sand.
