Solitaire itself is little more than a fuel stop, a bakery and a scatter of buildings, which is exactly why travellers remember it, and staying up here puts you above that with long views over the plain. It suits travellers breaking the drive between the Namib and the escarpment, or those approaching Sossusvlei from the north with a night in hand. The drive to the Sesriem gate is substantial, so this is a base for a relaxed schedule rather than a sunrise dash.
