Spitzkoppe is the cluster of bare granite peaks that rises about 700 metres out of the flat gravel plains between Usakos and the Skeleton Coast road. The main dome is one of the most photographed landforms in Namibia, and the surrounding boulder field holds the Bushman’s Paradise rock-art site and the natural rock arch that appears on half the country’s postcards.
Spitzkoppen Lodge is built into the boulder field itself, with chalets set apart from one another among the rock so that each looks out over granite and plain rather than at its neighbours. It is the most expensive property in this collection by a wide margin, and it is priced as a destination rather than a stopover.
Rates are half board — dinner, bed and breakfast — which is the only sensible arrangement given that there is nothing else to eat for an hour in any direction. The figure below therefore covers two meals as well as the room, and is not comparable with the room-only rates elsewhere in the Erongo.
The granite is at its best in the first and last hour of daylight, when it turns orange against the plains. That is the entire argument for sleeping here rather than visiting on a day trip from the coast, which is how most people see it and why most people see it badly lit.
Access is by gravel off the D3716 and B2, and the last stretch is corrugated but manageable in a normal car in dry conditions. There is no fuel and no shop at Spitzkoppe itself — Usakos, about an hour east, is the nearest supply point, and Swakopmund is roughly two hours south-west.
Guided walks to the rock-art sites and the arch are arranged separately from the room rate. Most guests stay one or two nights on the way between the interior and the coast.
As a price guide, a chalet for two adults on a half-board basis sits at around N$13,000 per night including taxes, unchanged across both dated checks. Use the link below for live availability and today’s price using the booking link on this page.
