Uis is a small settlement on the C36 below the Brandberg, Namibia’s highest massif, in the dry inland country between the Erongo and Damaraland. It grew around a tin mine that closed in the 1990s, and the tailings dumps still stand at the edge of town.
Green Elephant Cottages offers self-catering cottage units at Uis, booked room-only. Having a kitchen matters more here than in most places: the settlement has a small supermarket but nothing resembling a restaurant scene, and travellers arriving off the Damaraland roads are usually carrying their own supplies anyway.
Cottages also give you somewhere to sit out the middle of the day, which is a real consideration in Uis between October and March.
The Brandberg is the reason to stop. The White Lady rock painting sits in the Tsisab Ravine about half an hour north-west, reached on a guided walk of roughly two hours each way; guides are arranged at the ravine entrance and are compulsory. The massif rises to Königstein at 2,573 metres.
Uis has fuel, a small supermarket and basic services, and is the last of those before the Damaraland roads north. Summer afternoons regularly run well above 35°C, so shade, water and an early start matter here.
The town is a natural pivot between the Erongo and Damaraland: Twyfelfontein is around two hours north, Omaruru about two and a half hours east, and the coast at Henties Bay roughly two hours south-west.
