Stampriet sits in the Auob River valley about 60 km east of Mariental, where artesian water beneath the sand supports vineyards, citrus and vegetable gardens in otherwise dry Kalahari country. It is a small, green and very quiet settlement.
Stampriet Historical Guesthouse occupies one of the older buildings in the settlement, which gives it more character than the newer accommodation in the valley. The lead-in Standard Twin is quoted with breakfast included.
Stampriet’s history is bound up with the artesian water: the boreholes made permanent settlement viable here long before it was viable anywhere nearby, and the old buildings date from that period of confidence. Staying in one of them is the closest thing the valley offers to a heritage stay.
For travellers it is the calmest way to break the B1 run without staying in a town, and the western gateway to the red-dune Kalahari and the long gravel roads east toward Gochas and Aranos.
Note that this is a small property, so availability is limited and disappears quickly in the high season. Meals beyond breakfast should be arranged in advance — the settlement has a grocer but nothing you would plan an evening around.

Stampriet is also the western staging point for the gravel routes east along the Auob toward Gochas and Aranos — long, empty driving that should be started early and with full tanks and water.
Nights in the valley can be markedly colder than the surrounding sand country between May and August, when temperatures drop close to freezing. Pack warmer layers than the daytime heat suggests.
The settlement has a small grocer and a fuel point but no restaurant scene, so plan meals beyond breakfast in advance rather than assuming you will find something after dark.
