Kongola

Kongola is a small settlement on the Kwando River in the Zambezi Region, at the junction where the B8 highway crosses the river between Divundu and Katima Mulilo. It serves mainly as a gateway to Mudumu National Park and the Kwando core area of Bwabwata National Park, and as a practical stop for travellers moving along the region’s main road.

Geographic setting

Kongola sits where the B8 crosses the Kwando River, one of the perennial rivers that define the Zambezi Region’s wetland landscape. The surrounding floodplains and riverine woodland support significant wildlife populations, particularly along the river corridor south of the settlement.

Historical context

Like the rest of the Zambezi Region, formerly known as the Caprivi Strip, the Kongola area has a history shaped by its position at the meeting point of several countries’ colonial and modern borders, and by the river-based livelihoods of local communities. Community conservancies were established in the area from the late 1990s onward as part of Namibia’s community-based natural resource management programme, giving local communities a formal role in wildlife management and tourism benefit-sharing.

Kongola functions mainly as a road junction and service point, with the surrounding Mayuni and Mashi conservancies playing an active role in managing wildlife and community-based tourism along the Kwando River.

The Kwando core area of Bwabwata National Park, to the west, offers similar river and floodplain wildlife viewing, often combined with visits to Mahango and Popa Falls further along the Kavango.

Elephant, buffalo and a wide range of birdlife are drawn to the permanent water of the Kwando River, making the Mudumu and Bwabwata areas near Kongola a rewarding, if less-visited, wildlife destination.

The Mayuni and Mashi conservancies around Kongola are examples of Namibia’s community-based conservation model, in which local communities manage wildlife and tourism partnerships on communal land; visitors can support this model by using conservancy-linked lodges and guides where possible.
